Umbo (Otto Umbehr, 1902 – 1980) symbolises a kind of “big bang” in modern photography of 1920s – as art historian Herbert Moldering put it during his retrospective of the artist in 1995.

In the works purchased in 2007 and 2016, Beate Gütschow explores the relationship between reality and its depiction in the photographic image. Seven cycles on this theme have emerged since 1999, among them the two series on show here: “LS” (landscape) and “S” (city).

Bettina Pousttchi works at the interface between sculpture, photography and architecture. Her site-specific photographic interventions adopt an architectural scale, often taking up whole walls of buildings and referencing the urban or historical context of a place. Pousttchi articulates perceptions of reality in the digital age and explores the relationship between memory and history from a transnational perspective.
