The ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe is a unique cultural institution worldwide, because it is a place that expands the original tasks of the museum. It is a house of all media and genres, a house of both spatial arts such as painting, photography and sculpture and time-based arts such as film, video, media art, music, dance, theater and performance. The ZKM was founded in 1989 with the mission of continuing the classical arts into the digital age. This is why it is sometimes called the »electronic or digital Bauhaus« – an expression that is traced back to the founding director Heinrich Klotz. In its work, the ZKM combines research and production, exhibitions and performances, collections and archives, mediation and events. Through interdisciplinary connections of these fields of work, the ZKM as an agile organization can present and produce the development of art and media of the 20th and 21st centuries. Symposia and other formats of theoretical discourse between art, philosophy, science, technology, business and politics complement the ZKM programme to examine the effects of medialisation, digitisation and globalisation on society.

Kunsthalle Wien is a space which comprises the broad diversity of international contemporary art and its related contemporary discourses. To this effect, Kunsthalle Wien has been developing innovative exhibition and communication formats. Since it opened in 1992 – originally as a makeshift structure shaped like a container, today with locations at the Museumsquartier and Karlsplatz – Kunsthalle Wien, as an urban institution, presents national and international contemporary art. In this respect, it is both a location for established art and negotiation site for current societal issues as well as future developments.

Weltmuseum Wien It’s all about people. Just as in many other ethnographic museums all around the world, it is necessary for the Weltmuseum Wien to take a critical look into its own past in order to shape its future. In the course of the last few centuries, some of what can today be admired in our exhibitions was collected under somewhat questionable circumstances. It is, therefore, all the more important for us to have an open dialogue, are self-critical and see ourselves as a forum in which as many voices as possible should be heard.
